Remembering Eudy Simelane

Claiming rights to freedom, dignity & equality for all

April 23, 2009

JOHANNESBURG — On Saturday, 25 April from 09h00, we will again gather at the site where Eudy Simelane’s body was discovered for a community clean-up. We invite you to join us in your working gears, with tools and bags to store the waste.

As you are all aware, 28 April will mark the first year since her brutal murder. Her body was found with multiple stab wounds and mutilated in an open field in Tornado – one of the sections in the Kwa-Thema township, on that Monday morning.

Her death is suspected to have been motivated by her gender transgression and sexual orientation.

This year on 27 April 2009 – South Africa’s Freedom Day – we will mark this day in Kwa-Thema by gathering under the theme “Remembering Eudy Simelane & Claiming the Rights to Freedom, Dignity & Equality for All!”. The activities on the 27th April will include friendly soccer matches, poetry, speeches, music and dance, all preceded by a solemn moment of marking her death at 09h30. Also, the organizers hope to unveil the Eudy Simelane memorial ‘bridge’, next to where her body was discovered.

Directions are as follows:
From Johannesburg
1: Take the N17 highway past Germiston toll gate.
Follow the Springs N17 Highway
2: Proceeding straight on, you will see Carnival City Casino which will be on your right hand side. Proceed straight to Brakpan/Springs toll gate.
Total toll costs – one way – R10.00
3: Take the second off ramp - Ergo. At the stop sign turn right to Kwa-Thema and go over the bridge.
4: Proceed straight as the road bends; Save More Supermarket will be on your left hand side at the stop sign.
5: Turn left at the STOP sign and proceed until the next stop sign.
6: Turn right, you will meet the robots, don't turn but proceed straight after the robots. The Kwa-Thema Police Station will be on your left.
7: Go past Police Station, a church and a school on your left hand side.
8: Count three streets on your right hand side and turn right on the third street. You will see an open field on your right hand side. That is your destination.

Some people will already be there so you need not worry.
