Miami mother abducted son because father is gay

MIAMI, Florida — A mother charged with kidnapping her 11-year-old soon and fleeing the country claims she did it because she feared her ex-husband was attempting to turn him gay, the Miami Herald reported this past week.
Caren MacDonald admitted she took her son from a Broward county prep school in 2001 and took him to Costa Rica. MacDonald, an artist now living in Key West, told the courtroom her actions were justified because she feared for the influence her ex-husband’s gay lifestyle would have over their son.
According to the Herald, the jury was not present as MacDonald pled her case. The judge had removed the jury from the courtroom as he decided what portions of her testimony, including details about her ex-husband's sexual past, they would hear.
When the jury returned, MacDonald discussed that, during their marriage, she suspected he was gay, describing how he started wearing “tight-fitting” clothes and “looking a little gay.”
“I didn't understand how somebody could be straight and then be gay,” she said, shaking
The couple married in 1988 in Fort Lauderdale. In 1989, MacDonald discovered she was pregnant. The couple divorced in 1997.
According to the Herald, MacDonald painted herself as a devoted wife who cared for her husband throughout their marriage. She accused her ex husband of having a relationship with a man, Carlos Diaz, who touched their son inappropriately, massaging the child on his buttocks several times.
That allegation was part of the initial custody battle in 2001. At the time, a courtroom guardian for the child recommended that Diaz have no contact with him. The guardian also recommended the child spend more time with his father than his mother.
Ultimately, the father was granted full custody in the summer of 2001 after a court-appointed psychologist described Caren MacDonald as “mentally undone, delusional, bipolar, just about every mental illness in the book,” according to the Herald.
A few months later, she took her son from North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek.
U.S. Customs agents arrested Caren MacDonald in June 2002 in Houston as she got off an airplane from Costa Rica. She faces a third-degree felony charge of interfering with custody and a misdemeanor of violating a restraining order.
