Bush and Mubarak, a lovely couple, Ilga

BRUSSELS — The recent events in the United States of America and Egypt prompt ILGA to
release the following statement:
The International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) would like to bring
to the attention of the world the deplorable similarity between Presidents
Bush and Mubarak, two very different presidents of two very different countries
acting in similarity to appease their fundamentalist gallery of supporters.
Bush wants the votes of the religious, reactionary right at the next
presidential elections in the USA; and Mubarak wants Egypt's religious,
reactionary right to think that he is the defender of Islam! Two
presidents, one scapegoat - LGBT people.
The International Lesbian and Gay Association strongly condemn the recent
attempts by U.S. President Bush to seek reelection at the expense of the
LGBT community by seeking an amendment in the U.S. Constitution to ban
same sex marriages. The International Lesbian and Gay Association urges all
U.S. LGBT citizens to use their power - the power of the vote - to get this man
out of office and cease the fundamentalist attacks on our brothers and sisters.
We also vociferously condemn President Mubarak of Egypt for continuing to
unleash hate and fear amongst the LGBT community in Egypt. The recent
conviction of a 17-year-old gay youth to two years in jail is deplorable
and goes against every edict of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
ILGA appeals to all governments and individuals who oppose these Human Rights
abuses to take a stand to uphold the rights of every citizen of Egypt
regardless of race, gender, religion or sexual orientation.
