MINNEAPOLIS — Angels in America playwright Tony Kushner will return to the stage in early 2009 with the as-yet-unwritten The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures.
According to Variety, the play will debut at Minneapolis' Guthrie Theater, which has never before produced a play by Kushner, whose previous works include A Bright Room Called Day and Caroline, or Change.
Guthrie director Joe Dowling recently told the Associated Press that the play will be set in Brooklyn, N.Y. He also said it "will have a family dynamic, and it will be dealing directly with gay issues.
Dowling added that commissioning Kushners new play "is an indication of a big change" for The Guthrie. "We want to be seen as one of those theaters that creates new works for the American stage."
According to Variety, Dowling and Kushner first discussed the project early this year and an initial draft is expected in a few months. – Gay Link Content
