Bisexual is the New Black

Apparently women who like women in Hollywood are never really lesbians – they are just bisexual. At least, that’s what it seems like this week, with three actresses having recently come out and declared their bisexuality in the press.

What seemed rather cool when Drew Barrymore & Angelina Jolie dished out that they liked guys AND girls now seems like a broken record as actress after actress ‘shockingly’ reveals that they like to straddle the fence.

Nothing against the honestly bisexual, of course, but it makes one wonder if these women are really happily enjoying the best parts of both sexes – or if they think declaring themselves bi is safer for their careers than going all the way dyke.

Take former Buffy actress Iyari Limon, who recently came out as bi – but has been with girlfriend DJ Sandra Edge for almost a year, according to an interview she did with AfterEllen.com. Nothing is more liberating than keeping your options open, but how long do you have to be in a relationship with a girl before you trade in your ‘bisexual’ tagline for plain old ‘lesbian’?

Next up we have Terminator 3 star Kristanna Loken, whose infamous lip-locking with Pink in a Los Angeles nightclub was fodder for tabloids across the world. Loken claims, in an interview with Curve Magazine, that she’s never tried to hide her bisexuality. Funny, we don’t remember her being all that open about her bi status after the whole Pink incident. Anyway, now Loken has decided she wants to “talk about” being bisexual, telling Curve that ” I have dated and have had sex with men and women and have to say that the relationships I have had with certain women have been much more fulfilling, sexually and emotionally, than those with certain men.” The only response possible to this statement is – oh please!

Lastly, we have mega star soccer player David Beckham’s ex Rebecca Loos. Admittedly, she barely qualifies as an actress, considering her most famous gig was masturbating a pig on the reality television program, The Farm. Loos recently told PinkNews.co.uk that she loves “lesbians”, but that she is not one herself – she’s bisexual. Moreover, she says she might date women “occasionally”, but that she would only settle down with a man. This kind of talk only brings up yet another sticky question – if you’re only interest in women is an infrequent roll in the sack, can you really claim to be bi? In Loos’ case, we’ve decided that she’s either very repressed about her sexuality – or she just needs to stay over there on the straight side of the fence, because we don’t care much for trying on women like pairs of shoes.

The show is to be executive produced by Rosie O'Donnell, Dan MacDonald and Joe Del Hierro. Jim Biederman (Kids in the Hall) will also produce. Amanda Bearse (director of numerous episodes of Mad TV), is set to direct episodes of the series. The show will feature a combination of traditional sketches, musical numbers, pop culture parodies and recurring characters, all with an LGBT point of view. The series is slated for premiere by early 2007. “I'm excited to be part of something new, fresh and hilariously creative," said O'Donnell in a statement from LOGO. BBC America Cancels Lesbian-Inclusive Series Bad Girls

The lesbian-inclusive television program Bad Girls has been unceremoniously removed from the schedule at BBC America in the midst of season two of the show, according to an email we received in our inbox this week. The primetime soap features the stories of a group of women behind bars in a tough female prison rife with “lesbian love affairs, lecherous officers, bloody cat fights, illicit drug use” and more. Most notably, the show featured basically the only lesbian couple on non-premium cable in the U.S.

From the creators of Footballers Wive, Bad Girls was named most popular drama at the National Television Awards in the UK, where it has aired on Britain's ITV since 1999. Fans of the show have been left confused and angry about the sudden pull of the show three episodes before the end of the season. So far the only response from BBC is that it is “working” to air the final three episodes of season two – but they aren’t saying anything about airing further seasons.
