"I'd give myself four more years to make great films," Pitt, 40, told TV Movie.
"Then a new generation will be coming up. That's the way things go. Of course I'll still get roles when I'm 50 but they'll be worse and farther apart."
Pitt said his thoughts were now turning to having children with his wife, US television star Jennifer Aniston, 35, whom he married in 2000.
"I've been thinking more and more about a family," he said, in comments published in German.
Pitt said he also hopes to devote more time to his passion for architectural design. He has joined a committee with star architect Frank Gehry charged with developing a plan for the land next to the
Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
"I will mostly just be learning, but I'll also have an influence on the future of the city," he said.
"Los Angeles is a concrete desert without a soul and I'd like to make it liveable. Maybe that'll be my new career." –Sapa-AFP
