BERLIN PREPARES BID FOR 2010 GAY GAMES

Berlin, home to one of Europe's largest gay communities, is
planning a bid for the 2010 Gay Games, the city government said
Monday.

Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit, who in 2001 became the first openly
gay mayor of a German city, backs the move to bring the four-
yearly sports and cultural festival to the capital, spokesman Klaus-Dieter Fischer said.

Los Angeles is among other cities exploring a bid for the 2010
event, whose host will be chosen in Oct. 2005 by the Federation of
Gay Games.

Montreal was chosen over Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta to
host the 2006 event, which will involve 24,000 athletes and is
expected to draw some 200,000 visitors.

Berlin, whose history as a gay metropolis goes back as far as the 19th century, will be the first German city to bid for the event.
